If these spotter arms had a run in with a tank, I'd feel sorry for the tank. One overlooked aspect of these arms is probably the ability to use a bolt and a knurled nut from the side to really lock them into place (see photo where I'm using a Frogfits mag bolt and nut) versus only using a mag-pin from the rear. Honestly I'm not actually sure why all the 1" pins on rack attachments aren't threaded for a knurled nut to snug them up on a rack. Bit of a wait to get them, but these are the last spotter arms I'll likely ever need or want. Awesome!
One of my favorite accessories. Honestly awesome. If I was rich I would have all my pins replaced with these. I use them for Henny straps right now, but wish I could free them up for other uses.
If your gym equipment doesn't make you grin the first time you use it, you're buying the wrong stuff. The Kick Stand by Donnie Thompson, brought to life by Jason Campbell at Surplus Strength, had me smiling from the very first set.
As a 300 lb guy, I tend to be pretty hard on equipment. If something flexes, wobbles, or feels sketchy, I'll find it fast. The Kick Stand doesn't flinch. It's rock solid, inspires confidence, and feels like it's built to outlast me.
Another big plus is that it doesn't take up much space. My office gym isn't huge, so I love equipment that earns its footprint. So far I've used it for chest supported rows, 1 arm rows, Kelso shrugs, spider curls, and I'm already thinking of a dozen other movements to try.
Only a couple small things I could see as future tweaks, and this is really nitpicking. A way to make it free standing like a cane or motor scooter style support would make grabbing weights a little easier between sets. Also some type of built in hook or option to secure a curl bar would open up even more movement options. Nothing deal breaking at all, just ideas from someone actually using it in a tight space.
I really appreciate simple, common sense inventions like this, and collaborations with small American companies that actually care about high quality and building things right. 💪🐼
I bought two pairs of Surplus Strength spotter arms and can honestly say they live up to the hype. The quality is top notch, and they're easily the best spotter arms I've owned.
What really stood out was the customer service. I had a bunch of questions before ordering, and the owner took the time to answer all of them. He was great to work with and made sure I got everything in time.
I also love supporting veteran-owned businesses, so that was another big plus for me.
Bottom line, the product is awesome and the customer service was even better than expected. Surplus Strength has a customer for life.
Mahalos,
Boom
Bought two pairs to replace the bolts on a pair of Rogue Monster safety strap brackets. Just as strong, and has made adjusting the straps much easier for my athletes.
Overall great quality and I'm very pleased. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that there was powder coat overspray on the stainless steel 1" pins. Otherwise fantastic quality, American made, and a great design!
Really impressed with this unit. Delivery to Australia was fast and hassle-free, which was a great start. The build quality is excellent – solid materials, well finished, and clearly designed to last.
It’s a big win for space saving too. Perfect for a home gym without sacrificing functionality. Once installed, the pulley runs incredibly smooth
These Jcups are great are solid! They Look great with the surplus strength spotters arms. Pricey but American made. Worth it to me to support an American Company.
Surplus Strength UPS arrived in Australia within 2 weeks.
Very solid and a quality piece of equipment.
Have it mounted to a 3" × 3" Bells of Steel cross member. There was a little bit of play, but a single wrap of the cross member with gorilla tape fixed that!
Am very happy with the purchase.
Very well made and solid. As soon you put them in your your hand you can feel the high quality. Do mostly rack pulls and squats and they hold very well. Not sure I wanted to cough up 500 but no regrets it goes to an American manufacturer. Again the quality is incredible and customer service gets back to you fast. Thanks
I was a little concerned at first because it doesn’t fit tight on my Rogue Monster rack like I expected. I was thinking it would fit like a j-hook. But once In place it doesn’t move at all. Solid to the rack and SMOOTH.
Very nice product.
Came a bit damaged from shipping even though everything else was in great condition(spotter arms) but it doesn’t affect the use at all. Magnet is strong enough where it sticks but isn’t too difficult to remove as the head is smooth and not textured. All in all recommend it for the price.
The quality of threads on the inside of these nuts seems to be great. I’m using these in place of normal nuts on my new squat stand bottom cross member so I can break it down after a workout. These thread MUCH smoother than the nuts that came with my squat stand. I use a rubber washer on each side of the bolts, and hand tighten each of my four Surplus Strength nuts on the bottom crossmember, and the squat stand is very stable even without a top cross member. It takes about 5 minutes for setup, and a little less for breakdown for me now, but I’ve only done it a couple times. I think using the knurled nuts definitely makes it faster while still being secure enough for me since I use it one workout at a time then break it back down. These nuts are pretty versatile though. I may even get another 4 so I can occasionally attach a top crossmember too for more stability. Great quality and tolerances, good knitting. I’m very happy with these.
Quality Matters! And it shows in the products Surplus Strength produce. I bought a UPS and couldn't be more happy. It came packaged safely, quickly, and perfect. There was even a hand written note inside!
This thing is so smooth! Completely exceeded my expectations! Awesome addition to my rack.
Thank you for taking pride in your work and creating kick ass products!

I love these Stealth Spotters! They go on much easier than the rogue spotters, but they take up so much less real estate on the rack. The Stealth Spotters are easier to use. The waiting had me a little worried, but now that I have them, they were worth it. They are easier to use,(no more twisting to get them on or off), strong as hell, and I think they are more versatile. I ended up giving my rogue spotters to my son because these work better.
The Surplus Strength Speed Pins are an outstanding addition to any of your rack accessories needing pins ...
I've got 3 pairs of their 1" pins for my rack : 1 for my SS UPS High, a 2nd for my SS UPS Low, & just ordered a 3rd set for my Flip Down Safeties ...
The magnets on the SS Speed Pins hold better than any of the other 3 brands of Mag Pins I have - if I need more Mag Pins in the future, I will definitely order more from Surplus Strength ...
I bought this for my 6 year old boy. He loves it. The thickness is appropriate. Aside from the 2 month wait I’m satisfied. It fits well on my Rogue 1” hole rack.
The Surplus Strength UPS High and Low are excellent additions to my basement gym. The nylon pulleys are super smooth and the fit and finish of the components are excellent. The cables and carabiners are also well done.
I did have an issue with one of the UHMW plates on the inside channel of the low unit. Only one plate came installed and there were no screws included to mount the plate. I contacted customer service via the website request, and the response was fast and they shipped me screws that arrived in roughly 2 days. All is good now due to the solid and responsive customer service!
$700 is not a small sum of money for a pulley system. You could certainly get a plate loaded standalone pulldown/low row machine for roughly the same price. The beauty of the UPS is the fact it takes up no additional floor space and is very high quality.
I use my safety straps and a bench to do lat pull downs. I also use my FID bench with a -8 degree incline to sit on for low rows.
I’ve also used the unit for tricep push downs, bicep curls, and shoulder work.
I would not hesitate to recommend the UPS to anyone interested in a very useful and high quality home gym investment!
I had been thinking about the Surplus Strength UPS High for a while before finally pulling the trigger on ordering it ...
The Surplus Strength UPS High is so good & super smooth (even with the poly pulleys), that after installing it on my Rogue RM-4 Fortis rack & then using it for a few various pull-down & pull-over type movements - I immediately got back on their website & ordered the Surplus Strength UPS Low for my rack - & am really looking forward to receiving it ...
My experience with the Surplus Strength UPS High, this is one of those items that once you receive it & start using it, you'll wish you wouldn't have waited to make the purchase - it's so good & opens your fitness workouts to so much more, that it's well worth the investment - I now focus on my workouts & the results, not the initial cost of the unit ...
No regrets, what-so-ever !!!
Favorite attachment on my rack by far. The low profile works perfectly for my indoor gym, didn't have space for anything bulky. Build quality and customer service are both 10/10 - took a while to ship but well worth the wait.
Since receiving the UPS High/Low, I have used it almost every session! As seen within my images, I have a 21” depth folding rack and there is no issue with attaching the UPS to the side. I used to have a Spud Inc pulley, and while that was well constructed, a single pulley sways way too much! The dual pulley system with the UPS, as well as the low pulley option, is fantastic.
